HRC 4
Return to Glossary
Garments compliant to HRC (Hazard Risk Category) 4, as defined by NFPA 70E, 2009 edition, have an arc rating that is greater than or equal to 40 cal/cm².
Common arc ratings that are available in HRC 4 clothing include 40 cal/cm², 65 cal/cm² and 100 cal/cm². These high arc ratings are achieved with multiple layers of flame resistant fabrics and modacrylic liners. However, many cold weather work wear items, such as a quilted coat, may have an arc rating of 40 cal/cm² or higher.
To aid in a decision-making process, consider this:
* HRC 4 cold weather work wear is just that: it is a highly durable coat and bib that you would wear all day in the elements.
* HRC 4 short coats and bib overalls are less durable fabrics, but provide the protection. These items are intended for indoor use or limited outdoor jobs.
HRC 4 may also be called Level 4. In some cases, incorrectly, users may refer to HRC 4 as Class 4. Class 4 applies to ANSI standards, and other standards, but not to NFPA 70E. HRC and Level are correct identifiers. To ensure correct communication of a need, use the arc rating.
